Regional Initiative against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources

Bujumbura, Burundi, 3rd November, 2017: The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Regional Committee against illegal exploitation of natural resources will hold its 16th meeting in Khartoum, Sudan on 7th - 10th November, 2017 to assess the implementation of the six tools on the Fight against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources in the ICGLR Member States.

A ccountability and vision for the future of the RINR were the talk and deed from participants of the 13th Meeting of the Regional committee on the Regional Initiative to fight against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources (RINR) which took place in Rubavu, Republic of Rwanda on 19 to 21 April, 2016. During the opening ceremony of the meeting, the Chief Guest, the State Minister in charge of Mining Honorable Evode Imena, challenged the Committee Members to be clear on what they want to achieve and to design the right strategies for implementation. He called upon members to act in a way that their decision can influence the international market.

A draft White Paper on a Gold Regional Strategy was considered during the 13th Meeting of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Regional Committee on the Regional Initiative to Fight against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources (RINR).

ICGLR RINR Minerals Certification

This new development is directly linked to a successful completion of the pilot phase of the Third Party Audits of Mining companies and publication of 8 reports in a move to provide fact based credibility for certified conflict free exports of tin, tantalum or tungsten (3T) to the international market from the ICGLR Member States and compliance with all standards and requirements of the international mineral industry.

T he ICGLR RINR Minerals Certification Scheme is set to increase credibility for Great Lakes Region certified 3Ts exports at the international market. The ICGLR Member States formally recognized the linkages between the illegal exploitation of natural resources in the Great Lakes region and the funding of the protracted armed conflict by signing, adopting and ratifying the Protocol against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources (RINR) as part of a Pact on Security, Stability and Development, in November 2006.
