ICGLR holds its RINR meeting for accountability and envisioning

A ccountability and vision for the future of the RINR were the talk and deed from participants of the 13th Meeting of the Regional committee on the Regional Initiative to fight against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources (RINR) which took place in Rubavu, Republic of Rwanda on 19 to 21 April, 2016. During the opening ceremony of the meeting, the Chief Guest, the State Minister in charge of Mining Honorable Evode Imena, challenged the Committee Members to be clear on what they want to achieve and to design the right strategies for implementation. He called upon members to act in a way that their decision can influence the international market.

The Minister further called upon members to leverage on the information and technology in order to communicate more. The Chairman of the Regional Committee Mr. Jeannot Nderoumtate, called upon his colleagues to do their best so that all activities planned in the respective Member States can be facilitated better than before. Speaking on behalf of the ICGLR Executive Secretary Professor Ntumba Luaba, the ICGLR Director for Democracy and Good Governance progressing on well. The presentations were followed by discussions and suggestions. These discussions enriched the updates and set a basis for what needs to be done in the future audits which constitute another tool of accountability.

The Secretariat also gave an update on the overall activities of the RINR and the status of implementation of the recommendations of the previous meetings. The meeting also took time to discuss the draft White Paper for a Gold strategy as presented by the Secretariat. After discussions, recommendations for a brighter future in the Great lakes Region, especially with regard to RINR were given to the Secretariat, Member States and partners.

On his welcoming remarks, the representative of the ICGLR Rwanda National Coordinator Mr. Jean Marie Muhisemo from the National Coordination Mechanism, welcomed the participants and asked them to enjoy the good hospitality of Rwanda.
